As part of Reconciliation Week, we were fortunate to meet and hear from Dr Miriam Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann AM at our whole school assembly.
Our assembly referenced our Loreto value of the year, Freedom, and our symbol, the Freedom Kite, and how we all, like Bunjil, should be free to soar and flourish in life. Reconciliation Week calls us all to ‘be brave and make change’ so that we all can flourish – and our assembly focussed on ways we can all do this, before hearing from our special guest, Dr Miriam Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann AM.
Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr Baumann is the 2021 Australian Senior of the Year, a former school principal and community elder from the Top End community of Nauiyu in the Northern Territory. Dr Ungunmerr Baumann teaches an ancient Indigenous spiritually, called ‘Dadirri’ and how it can be used as a form of meditation and mindfulness in today’s busy world. ‘Dadirri’ – is a word that describes inner deep listening, awareness and connection to nature.
Dr Miriam-Rose told us that she feels that Reconciliation Week is getting better each year but before we can brave and make change, that we must have a better understanding of who we are – and that must go both ways.
